Cremythas Holidays
To well and truly get away from the world, you can't do better than holidays in Cremythas. Come and discover one of Corfu's untouched corners.
In the north east of the island, Cremythas is just about big enough to be called a hamlet. A single taverna. A smattering of traditional stone homes. All surrounded by rural Corfu's breathtaking beauty. Somewhere on the outskirts of this tiny town, villas like Bouritsa Farm snuggle in amidst the flourishing fauna, in blissful peace and quiet. You'll have your own pool, your own spot in the sun and your own private views out across the green mountain slopes. Not a stray disco beat or hint of karaoke for miles.
You may be in the middle of nowhere, but self catering holidays in Cremythas aren't difficult. The hamlet doesn't have a shop, but the busy town of Kassiopi is just a short drive away and you'll find supermarkets mixed in with all the shops selling tourist trinkets. Kassiopi is also your nearest port of call for pebbly beaches, a variety of restaurants and lively but laidback bars.
Swap the distant ringing of goat bells for a day of delighted screams at Agios Ioannis' Aqualand - Europe's second largest water theme park. Or plunge headlong into Corfu's natural world on the hiking and biking trails around Cremythas. Climb to the top of Mount Pantokrator, Corfu's highest peak, and catch your breath at the summit's monastery. Or how about the 220 kilometre Corfu footpath, from Arkoudillas in the south to Cape Agia Ekaterini in the north?
'Rustic Corfu at its best - Cremythas will win your heart with its simple charms, winding country walks and nearby pebbled bays.'
How does this sound? Lazy mornings following mountain trails that command heart-stopping views over the blue straits of Corfu. A late lunch of lemon-drizzled dolmades followed by a mouth-watering, home-cooked stifado at a hidden, hillside taverna. And a leisurely afternoon return to the kind of rural Corfiot village you thought didn't exist anymore.
That's what you'll get in Cremythas. A small, cosy hamlet of traditional stone houses and the occasional restaurant and shop. It's like a little portion of old-world Corfu that's somehow been separated from the island's herd of big, touristy coastal resorts. Here, the empty summer days are made-to-measure for walks in the tranquil countryside. Find an unmade track, and follow it, just for fun. Put a day aside to scale the heights of Mount Pandokrator and experience the magnificent panorama of farmland laid out below its summit. And finish with an amble around Strinylas, a pretty hamlet at the foot of the mountain, where the cool air revitalises walkers and casual visitors alike.
When you fancy time on the beach, the many pearly-pebbled coves around nearby Kassiopi are sure to please with their clear blue waters and sun-soaked rocks. And when you finally feel the 21st century calling, Kassiopi also presents the perfect excuse for a morning's shopping and sightseeing. Potter around the ruined medieval castle before hunting for bargains and then settling at a pavement cafe for a relaxing al-fresco coffee or ouzo. Life couldn't get much better, could it?
