Corfu Town Holidays
Corfu Town 's split into Old and New Towns. The New is where normal life goes on. The Old is an astonishing mish-mash of cultures - it practically screams aristocracy, thanks to the influence of the Venetians, French and Imperial Brits. And this is the backdrop for your bargain holiday to Corfu Town!
The Liston and the Esplanadae make up the Old Town. The Liston - once a promenade used by nobility - is now the best place to sip coffee in the sun. The Esplanade is Europe's largest square, with the beach is at one end and a Sunday bandstand at the other.
Quirky shops sell gold, wild honey and fig cakes in the alleyways off the Liston, while New Town is home to cosmopolitan boutiques. Drink in the aromas and colours of the market, piled high with olives and oranges. Shopaholic heaven. Bit of a history buff? A 16th century fortress watches over the town, complete with archaeology museums. Step into the incensed cool of St. Spiridon's Church, home to the mummified remains of Corfu's patron saint. Go sightseeing in style in a horse drawn carriage.
The sun is setting and tummies are rumbling. Luckily, you're spoilt for choice. Gourmet eateries. Traditional and simple fare. Even fast food joints. Whatever mood you're in, it's catered for here. Afterwards, if you're not quite ready to call it a night, get down to the clubs and discos in the commercial centre located just out of town.
Stay in the lap of luxury in Hotel Corfu Palace or grab something last minute - holidays to Corfu Town are just a click away.
'Tangled streets, shuttered Venetian houses, a rich culture and a dash of British influence - Corfu Town seduces every which way.'
If a town can be all things to everyone, Corfu Town comes very, very close. Colourful and buzzing, this charismatic capital's one of the Greek islands' best, simply because it has so many different faces.
Enter the old town with its narrow streets of faded Venetian houses and you could be in Italy. Here, as well as countless jewellers and carpet shops, you'll find loads of stores plying Corfu's prized olive oil and sweet honey.
You'll also find a host of landmarks, from the impressive St. Spyridon church to the eucalyptus-shaded Esplanade, with its park and cricket ground. Linger here at the Liston, an arcaded terrace of cafes, and watch the world go by over a cooling ginger beer. Nearby, you'll discover two imposing fortresses and some fascinating places to potter around. Make time for the atmospheric Archeological museum with its Mycean and classical collections, and the icon-filled Byzantine museum.
For modern retail therapy, the new town's packed with upscale jewellers and designer good stores ranged along wide, elegant streets. It's great for an afternoon's moseying, especially with its pavement cafes providing welcome pitstops.
When you fancy time out, the capital's small, sandy Mon Repos beach is good for chilling for a while. For full-on beach days though, hop on a bus to any one of the lovely bays along the coastline.
Corfu Town takes night owls seriously, too. By sunset, its bars and restaurants swing into action serving pre-dinner ouzo and some of the freshest seafood you'll ever taste. Up for more? Then grab a cab to the north of town where you'll find more than enough music bars and nightclubs to keep you swaying 'til dawn.
