Avlaki Holidays
If you're looking at holidays in Avlaki, then you're probably already in the know. This little gem has remained undiscovered by most.
Missed off most tourist itinerates and loved by the locals, Avlaki just about qualifies as a hamlet. This is the place you go if your honestly want to get away from it all. Two tavernas. One bar. And absolutely no shops. An escapist's heaven.
Self catering holidays in Avlaki have a brochure's worth of villas to choose from. The peaceful Federika Villa, the modern Villa Lavanda, Villa Sparta and Villa Hibiscus or the traditional Villa Petros. All of them only a short walk from Avlaki's main asset - the Blue Flag winning shingle shoreline.
The long pebbly bay of Avlaki's beach is practically unknown to outsiders, but the locals stream here. Float on your back in the crystal clear sea. Take in the beautiful backdrop of green hills and rocky coves. The gentle splash of canoe paddles, the unfurling of sails in the wind and playful squeals in the shallows are the only sounds you'll hear.
A twenty minute walk along coastal paths in either direction gets you to a centre of civilisation - Agios Stephanos or Kassiopi. A lively nightlife? A different beach? Or simply to stock up on supplies - it's all here. Corfu Town is only a boat ride away for enough sights and shopping to fill a whole week! And after the bustle of bigger resorts, you can slip back into your private paradise. The best of both worlds.
'An unspoilt bay, forest walks and a pretty pebble beach lapped by bright waters - Avlaki is made-to-measure for an undisturbed break.'
Avlaki should come with its own 'Do Not Disturb' sign. Set between livelier Kassiopi and quiet Aghios Stefanos on Corfu's north east shoreline, it's so small and peaceful it hardly figures on the island's tourist maps.
An assortment of good-class villas and beachside tavernas set around a curving pebble bay, it's hardly a resort at all. And that makes it excellent news if you're aching for a de-stressing, do-nothing sort of holiday.
Once you've stretched out on the pebbles here, it's just a matter of closing your eyes and letting the rhythmic sound of the waves transport your cares away, one by one. The pristine waters fringing the pebbles are Blue Flag commended, and the bay itself presents a heart-surging vista when you finally manage to lift your gaze from your holiday reading. And if you want to try something you'd never do at home, grab the opportunity to go dinghy sailing or windsurfing from the beach - the cooling breezes that arrive here mid-afternoon make them doubly easy and enjoyable.
When you want a bite to eat, a few local tavernas offer the obligatory Greek refreshments. And when you need a break from the hottest times of day, wander around the surrounding hillsides. Here, olive trees and swaying cypresses offer refreshing shade from the sun-baked pebbles.
For a day out, dive head first into nearby Kassiopi's collection of colourful shops and bars. Or take a boat trip to Corfu Town to plunge into its labyrinth of atmospheric streets filled with gift shops, eateries and historic sights.
