Agios Ioannis Holidays

If you fancy somewhere in Corfu without the tourist label, Agios Ioannis is most definitely the place to head. Slotting very much in to the 'small and friendly' bracket, this old-world village will charm you from the word go. Sitting in timeless olive groves and with a jumble of staggered stone houses, it's certainly not short on eye candy. And with everything you need, from tavernas to mini-markets -you won't need to travel anywhere for supplies. Of course, if you do fancy nipping about on the island, you're in the perfect spot. Not far from Corfu Town in fact, which has a great location at the heart of the island. Grab a map and you can easily spend your days shuttling between the past and the present here. And if you're travelling with young jetsetters - or are a kid at heart yourself - the fun-filled waterpark 'Aqualand' is within walking distance. If doing nothing is your holiday mantra though, you'll be right at home here. So where to start? Why not pop into the village square or 'platea' and watch the world go by as you sip a coffee? Ask for it very strong and ultra sweet and you'll fit right in with the welcoming locals. After that, take a wander around the quaint shops and bag yourself some mementoes to take home such as pretty lace embroidery and handmade jewellery. As the sun begins to fall, pull up a chair in an al fresco taverna. Try some of the local dishes, like 'stifatho', a meaty red wine stew with onions and tomato. And throw in a crisp bottle of white, such as a fruity 'Terras do Demo'. After that, you won't find any wild clubs here, but that's its appeal. Here it's all about good food, good wine and good company. So forget the old routine and get acquainted with this traditional retreat. It's a solid chunk of charm.
